Five Cebu Restaurants That Serve Filipino Favorites

What’s the best way to experience a destination? As for me, it’s imperative to try out the local cuisine.

If you’re in for an adventure especially when you’re here at the Queen City of the South, go out of your hotel and wander around the nooks and crannies and eventually you’ll find a carenderia, a food stall where passers-by drop in for a quick meal. In here you’ll find the usual Filipino favorites such as adobo, pansit, tinolang manok to name a few and would surely get a good meal for even a dollar.

However, if you’re looking to try out the best Filipino cuisine carefully prepared by well-trained Filipino chefs, here are five restaurants I would recommend for you to try out:

SALINAS BY GOLDEN COWRIE

I don’t know about you but Golden Cowrie has been slowly inching its way to making Filipino cuisine as its synonym. Kinilaw, pinakbet and sisig spread on a blanched banana leaf. If you haven’t tried these dishes yet, don’t leave this country as you’ll surely miss out big time. The best part of all, unlimited rice. Well I guess, you’re not that excited as much as my fellow Asians who are currently reading this post.

Suck the head first. That’s what he said. I guess the people over at Choobi Choobi are experts on how to properly eat shrimp. Yes, shrimp. And you could definitely request for an eating demonstration. With varying Filipino fusion flavors in a good mix of seafood and corn, you wouldn’t be able to stop until your blood pressure spikes like crazy because of the overdose in cholesterol. Just don’t tell your physician, yolo.

CAFÉ LORENZO

Oh my, a Filipino lunch buffet and it’s located in uptown Cebu at Cebu Grand Hotel in Escario. My favorites here surely include the platter with the dinuguan, puto cheese and pinaypay na saging combo and the humba in soft white bread. Just thinking and re-living that gastronomic moment surely makes me want to go there right now. And don’t you ever ignore and skip on the leche flan counter. I know you’ve been eyeing those fluffy desserts out when you were still putting some appetizers on your plate.

KOKO DINE STK + BBQ

Yup, it’s an instagrammable warehouse near Plaza Independencia serving sutukil. Pick out anything raw on the counter and tell the guys on the open kitchen which style of cooking you prefer them on. Since we’re near historical landmarks, I’m requesting the Lapu-Lapu fish to be turned into a soup dish. And oh, they have in-house chicharon otherwise known as pork cracklings. Try to eat them without a sound.

ZUBUCHON

Sugbu plus lechon equals Zubuchon. With more than eight branches in Cebu, this roasted pig favorite of Anthony Bourdain has been flying people from all around the world to Cebu. And may I remind you to never panic as it is organic. What an epic rhyming of words here in the Pacific. Don’t forget to pair it with Kamias shake to silence all the critics.

All right, now I guess you’re ready to try one out. Give us a shout out. Break it down.
