If ever you are visiting Tacurong in Sultan Kudarat, one of the most popular places you can visit is Baras Bird Sanctuary. The site is visited by numerous bird lovers every day all dying to feast their eyes on the attractive bird species that live in this paradise.

About Baras Bird Sanctuary




Baras Bird Sanctuary is an area covering about two hectares of land that is home to tens of thousands of beautiful birds. The area is located on the bank of a river and includes swamplands, wetlands, and marshes. The sanctuary is the most popular tourist site in Tacurong. Each year, numerous local and foreign tourists throng to the area to enjoy the sights and melodies of some of the world’s most beloved birds including the great egret, the intermediate egret and the Rufus night heron. Baras was declared a bird sanctuary by the city government in 2002.


How to Get There

Baras Bird Sanctuary is located 7 kilometers from Tacurong City center and can be accessed using various ways. You can drive there using any land vehicle, or cycle there if you are staying in Tacurong City. The city is located four hours from Davao and just two hours from General Santos City.
What to see and expect
A tour of Baras Bird Sanctuary is filled with adventure as one comes face-to-face with a sea of beautiful birds perched on lush trees or soaring overhead. Sometimes, the sheer number of the birds here can overwhelm you with wonder. Expect to see the majestic great egret, which is the largest bird in the heron family in its full plumage. The great egret is one of the seven species of birds available in the sanctuary. You can also look forward to an encounter with the black crown night heron as it hunts in the marshes nearby.

Other sights common to bird sanctuaries are plentiful here, for instance, tens of thousands of bird nests, feathers lying on the ground, hatchlings and eggs at the feet of trees and so on. Different chirps of the birds fill the air throughout the day. Remember not to disturb anything during your tour to the area, it is best to let nature take its course. The ideal time to visit the area is two hours to sunset so you can see the nocturnal birds leaving for hunting while the other birds arrive after a busy day spent looking for food.
